Basic Astrology... Very

* Originally posted October 2010

I am beginning my first post to explain basic astrology.Of course, I am not going to simply only talk about sun signs. It’s very basic, but not simple. When most people think of astrology, they think of the sun sign. The sun sign is what magazines/wesbites/newspapers usually show in their horoscopes. One ( very usual ) argument against astrology is that we can not divide people into 12 categories. They are correct; we can’t do that, and if you know what real astrology is all about, you won’t. For example, if you were born on October 30th, you’re a Scorpio. Cha-ching!! We all know sun signs, but still, most people don’t know that even the sun has house placements and aspects that modify it. But I am not going there right now!!
THE SUN is what I just described. If you’re born November 29th, then you’re a Sagittarius. If you’re born June 21st, you don’t know if you’re a Gemini or a Cancer. Do not worry and do not be confused by cusps, if you hear about them. Let’s take June 21st for example. Sometimes the sun is in Gemini ( Tropical/Western Astrology ) on June 21st while other years it moves into Cancer. You need to do a natal chart to see what sun sign you are if you’re born on a “cusp.” The SUN in our natal charts represents our “core” personalities and our ego. Now, your sun has house placements and aspects, which will modify your sun sign. I am having that for a later post. I’m trying to stay basic.
THE MOON is not as well-known. Traditionally , it has been associated with women. And back in the day, if you were a woman, you were more likely to read your “horoscope” for your moon sign rather than your sun sign. Nowadays, we don’t do it that way, and the moon can apply to both men and women, and it does. The Moon represents our emotions and behavior. Usually, our Moon sign is more hidden underneath our rising sign ( which I will get to later ), sun sign, and other planets. Unless your moon is conjunct the asc, then that is different. ( Again, I will get to that in another post ). The Moon is something we are going to show those who we are close to, not necessarily to acquaintances and new people you meet. Moon synastry and compatibility is important with friendships and intmate relationships.
MERCURY deals with communication, how we learn, details, intellect to some level, and short term transportation. I do think Mercury is important in relationships/friendships, because sometimes those things can fail when there is a communication problem. But Mercury is also important with your academics. It shows how you learn. Let me make this clear: One Mercury Sign is NOT more intelligent than the other. Mercury is not a valid way to test IQ or academic intelligence. However, it can be used to show what you may find intellectually interesting, depending on house placement and aspects. But on a basic level, Air Mercuries communicate in a way that is “airy”: In general, they are good at communication, level headed, and sound knowledgeable. Of course, there are varying differences between the three. Gemini likes to know a little bit about everything, while Libra is more diplomatic and fair. Aquarius Mercury thinks outside of the box. Fire Mercuries communicate with enthusiasm!!!! ( Unless something else in their chart prohibits this, or they only show in writing like me ). Fire Mercuries are usually good communicators who are charismatic and creative. Of course, there are variances. Aries Mercury may speak fast, yet clear, and have a quick mind. They may also get bored easily, and may not like reading long novels. Sagittarius Mercury is great for the big picture, but may not see something that is right in front of them. ( Haha ). Leo Mercury likes talking about themselves, but has an intellect that is creative, imaginative, and confident. Earth Mercuries are grounded and may offer good advice. Logical and detail oriented are the best ways to describe them. Virgo Mercury is probably the most detailed and logical, but maybe has a hard time focusing on the big picture. Taurus Mercury is grounded and sensible. Capricorn Mercury is systematic, linear, practical and goal oriented. Water Mercuries communicate with emotion and depth. Is it possible to see someone with a Water Mercury to persuade you to buy a car to invoke your emotions? Possibly. Scorpio Mercury is good for probing. They may make good investigative reporters. Cancer Mercury is practical, yet can be very tender in their communication style. Pisces Mercury is imaginative, dreamy and big picture oriented.
MARS deals with aggression/assertion, drive, and sex drive. It is traditionally associated with men and even now, it is said that a woman’s Mars sign will show what she’s into. However, most people regardless of gender have goals and a sex drive, so I can think it can apply to both sexes.Mars also represents anger. If you have anger problems, check your Mars sign, placement and aspects. Especially look for any aspects to the Moon.
VENUS is love and romance. It’s sociability and how we show affection. It’s how we may be in relationships. There are questions on Yahoo Answers like, “My man is a Sagittarius Venus. Will he cheat?” or “I had a boyfriend who has a Gemini Venus. He cheated. Do all of them cheat?” Even looking at Venus sign is too simple. Not all Gemini and Sagittarius Venus people cheat. You have to mainly look at house placement and aspects for that. In the 8th house can show commitment ( but probably on someone’s terms )
JUPITER is luck, higher education, the higher mind, generosity, religion, and expansion. Jupiter is associated with Sagittarius. Sagittarius is associated with foreign travel. I have Jupiter in Gemini. My mind is always racing and sometimes I start to many things at once. Jupiter can also be associated with humor.
SATURN changes only once a year, so many people in one year may have the same sign. But that’s okay, because we all have different house placements and aspects. Saturn represents hard work, dedication, limitation, obstacles, climbing the social ladder, society, and conservatism. Where Saturn is in your chart will show where you have to do hard work or may have obstacles. Saturn-Moon aspects may show that you try to limit your emotional expression. Just sayin’.
URANUS… no, it’s not YOUR-ANUS, though if you want to spell it that way, then you’re more than welcome to. It does quite sound like that, though. Uranus is a generational planet. What does that mean? Well, it means that many people in a generation have the same Uranus sign. However, Uranus can be personal, when you look at house placement and aspects. Uranus deals with revolution, social change, quirks, in with the new and out with the old, novelty, innovation, creativity, etc. It is the higher octave of Mercury. Uranus is typically associated with genius.
NEPTUNE is another generational planet. But you can see personal influence in aspect and house placement. Neptune deals with spiritualism, addictions, illusions, fantasy, imagination, sensitivity, etc.

PLUTO
is not a planet anymore, but it still holds significance in astrology. People are obsessed with the Pluto in Scorpio generation. Pluto deals with the occult, sex, and transformation. On a societal level, it represents corruption, power, and transformation. Last time Pluto was in Aquarius, the French were having a revolution. In the 1980’s, Pluto was in Scorpio and people learned about AIDS. The terrorists attacks of September 11, 2001 ( religious ) happened in Pluto in Sag. I the beginning of Pluto in Cap in 2008, we had the beginnings of the recession.

Well. That is as basic as it gets. I can go in more detail about each of the planets in later posts, but I wanted to give a very basic outline to the planets and what they mean.
Have fun and be safe on Halloween!
